18:00 Cosmology and the formation of galaxies A talk by  Clément Stahl, PhD in Theoretical Cosmology

In this talk, we will discuss state of the art cosmological models along with their observational evidences. We will also discuss some of their philosophical implications related to the scientific method.

18:45 The biology of coronaviruses A talk  by Aishwarya Juneja,  PhD student in Molecular and Cellular Biology

This talk will cover everything, starting from the origins and evolution of the coronaviruses to the intricate molecular mechanisms underlying the host-virus interactions. The goal is to unravel the structural biology of these viruses, highlighting the roles of key components and explaining how they hijack host cells to replicate and spread. Come and discuss, over snacks and beers, what truly makes a virus pandemic-worthy!

19:30 If Every Job Paid the Same, What Career Would You Choose? A talk by Sanat Sogani, PhD sutdent in Political Theory

Work isn’t just about the paycheck – for many it’s also a source of meaning. Imagine a world where every career, from artist to engineer, from teacher to mechanic, offered the exact same wage. What kind of work would you choose? And what does this reveal about what we truly value in a job? In this presentation, we’ll dive into the political and philosophical debates around what makes work meaningful and how society should fairly distribute both wages and the opportunity for fulfilling careers. We will step into the shoes of a well-intentioned manager or a policy maker, tackling tough questions about fairness and justice. We will discuss these controversial questions as analytical philosophers tend to do – blending intuitions with rigorous reasoning!

20:15 : Towards more beautiful and organic solar cells – by Olivier Bardagot, CNRS researcher in Polymer Engineering at ICPEES (CNRS-University of Strasbourg).
Come to this talk to learn about the use of solar cells in the world, how electrical current is generated from the Sun, and get an introduction to a new, greener, and colorful technology of solar cells: the organic solar cells based on carbon-based materials.

21:00 : Kaiserpalast : A slice of Strasbourg’s history – by Laetitia Zaleski. Get an introduction to the fascinating history of Strasbourg, through this (in)famous monument that crowns the Neustadt.

– A talk by Eléa Héberlé, Dr. in molecular biology and plant educator on Plantoscope, PodcastScience and Echoscience Grand Est

What’s the connection between Stardew Valley, Minecraft, The Witcher or Red Dead Redemption?
They’re all very different games, but at the heart of them are plants: from biomes and lore to game mechanics, the plant world is a huge source of inspiration for game developers.
As such, is there a way to use them beyond that to raise interest and awareness of the natural world?

Nerd Nite Strasbourg #4 – April 11th : Fake news, Chikens and Physics !

Come share a drink at Le Shadok for Strasbourg’s fourth Nerd Nite ! You’ll learn all about fake news in research, why bats can live 40 years and you’ll get a layman’s introduction to statistical physics!

Expect three exciting presentations in English, each lasting around 20 minutes, followed by a discussion. You can learn about different topics while sipping a beer or Schorle 🍻.

-A talk by Rajat, physicist turned neuroscientist (PhD student in Computational Neuroscience, MSc in Theoretical Physics)

This talk will give a layman’s introduction to statistical physics, which studies the behavior of a large number of interacting units/particles. The talk will also explain how statistical physics can be applied to understand problems in other scientific disciplines.

🔬Fake news in biomedical research: how, why and the clues to identify them
A talk by Isabelle Durand-Zaleski – Professor of Medicine and Doctor of Economics

The COVID 19 pandemic and the discussions about treatments and vaccine showed that everyone was interested in using the results of biomedical research but that differences in the understanding of the methods and the interpretation of data almost led to civil war in France. The talk will give some insights on what is biomedical research, why are the rules very stringent and how do you finally make a decision on whether a drug is safe and effective, or not.

🐔Why do we age? (and why chicken do live 20 years)
– A talk by Adrián Moreno Borrallo, PhD Student in Ecophysiology, Ethology and Evolution

The talk will give some insights into the reasons of aging as a phenomenon in life beings, with a short introduction on the mechanisms producing it, but mainly centered into the different theories that try to explain why it evolved, including some ideas about how and why different organisms age differently (e.g. why birds double mammals’ lifespan? How bats can live 40 years, or naked mole-rats more than 10 times longer than similarly sized house mouse (30 vs 3 years?)).
